Triple-subtype census numbers are uncommon in the 1982 cud catalog because they require a specific set of production circumstances: the fractured die must have remained in service long enough — or been paired with planchet feeds diverse enough — to strike coins on three distinct subtype configurations before being pulled from production. For CU-51, the three documented subtypes are Zinc Small Date, Bronze Small Date, and Bronze Large Date, implying that the die operated across at least two different date punch setups and two different planchet compositions during its fractured service life. On this bronze planchet, the solid copper-zinc alloy deforms into the rim fracture zone as a continuous mass, and the resulting distortion integrates with the coin's peripheral features without any plating boundary to complicate the appearance.
