Description

Notable as a product of the early P-mint-mark era, this 1982 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel cud was struck just two years after the Mint began adding the P designation to nickels in 1980 — ending over two centuries of Philadelphia coins bearing no mint mark on most denominations. CU-5c-1982P-01, the first documented cud for this date and mint, is cataloged by Cuds on Coins. The P mint mark's presence on the obverse means this cud can be definitively attributed to Philadelphia production without relying solely on the absence of a mint mark, a significant improvement for variety attribution. A cud error forms when a section of the die rim fractures and breaks away, leaving a void that fills with planchet metal during striking to create a raised featureless blob at the edge. The 1982 date also carries broader numismatic significance as the year the cent's composition changed from solid copper-zinc to copper-plated zinc, though the nickel's alloy remained unchanged.
