Description

From the most complex transitional year in Lincoln Cent history, this 1982-D Large Date Bronze cent carries the second cataloged cud for the date and composition. The year 1982 produced seven distinct cent varieties as the Mint transitioned from 95% copper bronze to copper-plated zinc: Large Date Bronze and Small Date Bronze from Philadelphia, Large Date Zinc and Small Date Zinc from Philadelphia, Large Date Bronze and Large Date Zinc from Denver, and Small Date Zinc from Denver. This specimen falls into the Denver Large Date Bronze category, identifying it as one of the copper-composition cents struck before Denver completed its switch to zinc. A cud forms when a die rim section fractures and separates entirely, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. The bronze composition matters because the metallurgical properties of the 95% copper alloy created different die stress patterns than softer zinc planchets, potentially influencing where and when rim fractures occurred.
