1982-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1982-D 1c WRPM-002, this Lincoln Memorial cent variety shows a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunching on the Large Date Bronze subtype. The 1982-D Large Date Bronze is one of seven distinct 1982 cent varieties produced as the Mint transitioned from 95% bronze to copper-plated zinc. Obverse die markers include an ENE/WSW die scratch connecting the bottoms of the 9 and 8 in the date, a NW/SE die scratch inside the upper left of the W in WE, and a die scratch SE from the upper left inside of the U in TRUST to the lower extremity of the S in TRUST. Reverse die markers include a die gouge about one-fourth of the way up on the lower right side of the M in AMERICA, a die gouge in the field below the left leg of the last A in AMERICA, and light N/S die cracks at the tops of columns ten, eleven, and twelve of the Memorial. Confirming the Large Date Bronze subtype is a prerequisite to establishing the RPM designation, and both markers together produce a precisely attributable variety with a specific collecting niche within the complex 1982 cent family. The rotated repunching is visible under 5x to 10x magnification on well-struck examples.
