1981 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Holding the primary WDDO designation for the 1981-P Washington Quarter, this Wexler Team attribution exhibits a spread towards the center on LIBERTY and the date — two of the most prominent obverse elements on John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington. The inward-directed spread creates secondary contours displaced toward the center of the coin on both the inscription and the four-digit date, providing two distinct diagnostic zones that should show consistent displacement direction. A subtle die marker supports attribution: a weak die dent manifesting as a small dot can be found to the right of the upper portion of the second numeral 1 in the date (the final digit). No reverse die markers have been noted. The "towards the center" spread direction is characteristic of certain hub doubling geometries where the secondary impression shifts inward relative to the primary, compressing design elements slightly toward the coin's core. Attributed under variety ID 1981-P 25c WDDO-001, no cross-references to other systems are currently known. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition. Examine LIBERTY and the date for inward-displaced secondary contours, and look for the faint dot marker to the right of the upper second 1 in 1981 as an additional confirmation point.
