Eighteenth and highest-numbered entry in the current 1981 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1981-18 closes out the known record of rim die failures for this date as cataloged by Cuds on Coins. Reaching eighteen confirmed cud varieties for the 1981-P cent places it among the more prolific dates in the Lincoln Memorial series for this error type, trailing the extraordinary 1980-P census (which exceeded thirty entries) but nonetheless demonstrating that die rim failures were a consistent and well-documented phenomenon at the Philadelphia Mint during this period. As the final entry in the current census, CU-1C-1981-18 does not preclude future discoveries — additional cud-producing dies from 1981 may yet surface as error coin searchers continue to examine rolls, bags, and individual coins from this date. The 1981 Philadelphia cent occupies a historically significant position as the last complete production year for the copper alloy Lincoln cent.
