Description

Opening the Cuds on Coins census for the 1981 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, CU-1C-1981-01 is the first confirmed cud variety cataloged for this date and mint. As the inaugural entry, it established the baseline against which all subsequent 1981-P cud discoveries would be compared — every later submission must demonstrate that its rim break position, angular extent, and associated die characteristics differ from those recorded for CU-1C-1981-01 and all other previously cataloged entries. First-in-census varieties frequently attract collector attention both for their historical precedence and because they are sometimes — though not always — among the more frequently encountered examples for their date, having been discovered first precisely because more specimens survived in the collector population. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures completely, leaving a void that produces a raised, featureless blob on all subsequently struck coins.
