1980 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
One of the most widely recognized and actively sought Lincoln Memorial cent doubled dies, the 1980 1¢ WDDO-001 carries an exceptional array of cross-references that testifies to its prominence in the error coin literature: CONECA 1-O-V, Cherrypickers' Guide FS-01-1980-101 (formerly FS-034), Breen #2292, Crawford CDDO-001, and Coppercoins 1980P-1DO-001. This Class V counterclockwise pivot doubled die exhibits spread from a pivot point near the rim at approximately 11 o'clock, producing clear doubling on the date, LIBERTY, the front folds of Lincoln's vest, the tie, and slightly on UST of TRUST. The pivot mechanism means that design elements farthest from the 11 o'clock pivot point show the most pronounced separation, making the date and lower portions of LIBERTY the best areas to examine when cherrypicking for this variety. The obverse die markers include circular die scratches running through the lower right face and two parallel die scratches running southeast from the bottoms of I and N in IN. The reverse carries a die scratch running east-northeast from S of PLURIBUS through the lower right first A to M of AMERICA, another running east-southeast through the bottom of the second S of STATES to O in OF, a very strong scratch running west-northwest to east-southeast through the upper third and fourth Memorial bays, and numerous additional scratches throughout the reverse field. The inclusion of this variety in Walter Breen's comprehensive encyclopedia (as #2292) and in the Cherrypickers' Guide confirms its status as a variety of sufficient collectible importance to merit active searching in circulation finds and dealer inventories. The 1980 Philadelphia cent was historically significant as the first year the P mintmark appeared on Lincoln cents, and the coin was struck from the standard 95% copper alloy.
