1979 Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-1979-01
Error
Description
One of the strongest documented atypical die clashes in the Jefferson Nickel series, the ADC-5c-1979-01 from the Philadelphia Mint displays an unabraded clash — meaning the die surfaces were not polished after the clash event, preserving the full extent of the transferred design elements. The obverse shows clear traces of Monticello's building outline along with the letters M and O from MONTICELLO, while the reverse displays a complete profile and hair outline of Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait transferred from the obverse die. The unabraded state is significant: many clashed dies are caught during quality inspection and either retired or polished to remove the transferred design elements before returning to service. This die evidently continued striking coins without remediation, producing pieces that show both sides of the clash transfer in their full, undiminished detail. Cataloged by MadDieClashes, the complete profile and hair outline visible on the reverse represents one of the more dramatic clash transfers documented on a Jefferson Nickel, as the detailed contours of Jefferson's portrait — from forehead to chin, including the hair queue — are faithfully rendered as ghostly raised traces within the Monticello design field.
