1976-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Struck in 40% silver for proof collector sets during America's Bicentennial celebration, this 1976-S quarter DDO-005 presents medium spread on IN GOD, the throat area of George Washington's portrait, WE TRUST, and the dual date 1776-1976. The Bicentennial quarter featured a Colonial Drummer reverse designed by Jack L. Ahr, paired with John Flanagan's standard Washington obverse bearing the special dual date. VarietyVista catalogs this under UVC-567 and DMR-009, with three documented die stages: Stage A in early die state, Stage B in early die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The silver proof composition and Bicentennial theme combine to make DDO-005 particularly collectible — silver Bicentennial proofs were sold separately from standard clad proof sets, and their limited production makes die varieties from this issue scarcer than those on the higher-mintage clad versions. Medium spread on the throat area of Washington's portrait is an unusual diagnostic zone that distinguishes DDO-005 from other Bicentennial quarter doubled dies that may affect the same inscription elements but without the portrait detail involvement. The dual date 1776-1976 provides four numerals plus a hyphen for diagnostic examination, with medium-class displacement creating clearly visible secondary impressions on these sharply defined characters. The Bicentennial coinage program produced three denominations (quarter, half dollar, and dollar) with special reverses and dual dates, and die varieties from all three have attracted dedicated collector followings.
