Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as CU-50c-1776/1976-02R with the cross-reference KHDC-76-2R (Kennedy Half Dollar Cuds) and documented on January 19, 2020, this reverse cud appears on the Bicentennial Kennedy half dollar. The Bicentennial halves carry the distinctive dual date "1776-1976" and feature Seth Huntington's Independence Hall reverse design, replacing Frank Gasparro's standard heraldic eagle for the one-year commemorative issue. Bicentennial halves were produced in enormous quantities at both Philadelphia and Denver throughout 1975 and 1976 (no 1975-dated halves exist — all carry the 1776-1976 dual date), creating an extended production window during which die failures could accumulate. The reverse cud interrupts some portion of the Independence Hall design, which features the historic building's facade, the inscription "200 YEARS OF FREEDOM," and the denomination. The KHDC cross-reference connects this variety to the specialized Kennedy half dollar cud registry, providing continuity with the pre- and post-Bicentennial Kennedy cud census. Bicentennial coins occupy a unique niche in error collecting because their one-year-only reverse designs mean that any die variety on the commemorative side is exclusive to that design — unlike the standard eagle reverse, which was used across decades of production. This scarcity of design window gives Bicentennial error varieties an inherent collecting distinction.
