1975 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-IV+VIII, the 1975 WDDO-004 is notable for exhibiting multi-class doubling — a combination of Class IV (offset) and Class VIII (tilted hub) hub doubling acting together on the same die. Multi-class doubled dies are less commonly encountered than single-class varieties because they require two distinct types of hub misalignment to occur during the die-sinking process, making them objects of particular interest to advanced variety specialists. The doubling manifests as a spread to the north on the letters TY of LIBERTY. An extensive set of die markers documents this variety on both sides of the coin: on the obverse, a light die scratch runs north-northeast from the top right of the Y in LIBERTY, and a die gouge touches the upper right L of LIBERTY. The reverse carries an unusually detailed constellation of diagnostics — a die gouge to the right of the center of the N in UNITED, a die scratch running north from the upper right A in STATES to the rim, two parallel die scratches running southeast from the top of the E in ONE, a die scratch running northwest from the top left of the T in CENT, a short vertical die gouge to the right of the lower T in CENT, and a die gouge between the lower E and N of CENT. This wealth of reverse die markers makes WDDO-004 one of the most thoroughly documented doubled dies in the 1975 Philadelphia cent catalog, providing collectors with abundant diagnostic checkpoints for confident attribution.
