1975-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1975-D 1¢ WRPM-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2 and Coppercoins 1975D-1MM-005, this repunched mintmark variety displays the Denver "D" shifted to the northwest — D/D Northwest. The triple cross-referencing across CONECA, Coppercoins, and the Wexler system confirms this variety's recognition by all major attribution authorities for Lincoln cent die varieties. An extensive set of die markers accompanies this variety on both sides of the coin. On the obverse, approximately east-to-west die scratches appear in front of Lincoln's profile, passing through the date and mintmark area. Multi-directional die scratches are present above LIBERTY, and a die dot sits to the right of Lincoln's upper ear. The reverse carries equally distinctive diagnostics: a die gouge above the I in UNITED, another to the right of the second S in STATES, die scratches running southeast through STATES and continuing through the Memorial bays and below the Lincoln Memorial, and a die gouge within the N of CENT. This constellation of markers on both obverse and reverse makes WRPM-001 one of the most thoroughly documented repunched mintmark varieties for the 1975-D date, providing collectors with abundant diagnostic points for confident attribution. The northwest shift direction distinguishes this variety from the northeast-shifted RPM-001, and collectors building a comprehensive 1975-D RPM type set will need both orientations to represent the range of mintmark placement errors that occurred during hand-punching at the Denver Mint.
