Opening the 1975 Denver Mint cud census, CU-1C-1975D-01 is the first documented rim break variety for this date-mint combination. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety exhibits the hallmark characteristics of a cud error: a raised, featureless mass of metal along a section of the coin's rim where a fragment of the die broke away entirely. When a piece of die steel separates from the rim, the resulting cavity allows planchet metal to flow unchecked into the void during subsequent strikes, producing the distinctive blob that gives the error type its name. Cuds are among the most visually dramatic die errors a collector can encounter, as even small rim breaks create an immediately visible departure from the coin's normal design.
