Description

Second in the DDO catalog for the 1973-S proof silver Eisenhower Dollar, DDO-002 displays medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date on Frank Gasparro's obverse portrait of President Eisenhower. The silver proof Ike Dollars were struck in 40% silver clad composition — outer layers of 80% silver bonded to a silver-rich core — and sold exclusively in special collector sets, giving them lower mintage than copper-nickel clad counterparts. Die markers UVC-051 and DMR-005 confirm the working die across three documented states: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State presenting the sharpest spread, Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The proof striking process, using polished dies and planchets with multiple impressions at increased pressure, creates mirrored fields that enhance the visibility of medium spread on the motto. The 1973-S silver proof Eisenhower Dollar weighs 24.59 grams on a 38.1mm planchet. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST and the date under 5x to 7x magnification for medium directional displacement, where the proof surface may reveal secondary impressions more clearly than on business strikes.
