1973-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Bearing the DDO-001 designation for the 1973-D Eisenhower Dollar, this variety shows light spread manifesting as strong split serifs on IN GOD WE TRUST. Die markers include UVC-102 and DMR-002. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state; Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed early die state pairing at Stage A represents the sharpest impressions for attribution purposes. Split serifs — where the terminal strokes of letters appear bifurcated rather than solid — are a hallmark of light hub doubling and require careful magnification to distinguish from die deterioration doubling, which can produce superficially similar effects. The Eisenhower Dollar series (1971-1978) was the last large-format dollar coin struck for general circulation, and its substantial size provides ample design area for detecting variety diagnostics. The 1973-D issue was struck exclusively in copper-nickel clad at the Denver Mint for commerce, as silver versions were limited to San Francisco collector strikes.
