1972-S Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

This proof parent listing documents the same die variety as 1972-S WDDO-004 — a San Francisco proof Lincoln Memorial cent showing a very close Class I clockwise spread on the lower LIBE of LIBERTY, the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, and the upper digits of "72" in the date. The variety affects a broader range of design elements than the LI-only spread of Proof WDDO-002, making it somewhat easier to detect during systematic proof set examination despite the individual letter displacements being characterized as "very close." The obverse carries a distinctive die marker: a small die gouge (dot) positioned on the base of the bust, northeast of the designer's initials (VDB). This single obverse marker is sufficient for initial screening — collectors can quickly check the VDB area under low magnification before committing to the more time-intensive examination of LIBERTY and IGWT for the characteristic clockwise spread. The reverse die provides additional confirmation through three diagonal die scratches at the right end of the steps, two die scratches running through the statue's right leg, and a die scratch traversing the lower fourth and fifth Memorial bays. On proof specimens, the Memorial detail — particularly the steps and statue — is rendered with extraordinary sharpness, making these reverse markers clearly visible under standard magnification. The multi-element doubling distribution (LIBE + IGWT + date) combined with the accessible die markers on both sides makes this among the more identifiable proof doubled die varieties in the 1972-S catalog, suitable for detection by collectors with intermediate variety-hunting experience and standard magnification equipment.

Die Markers

• Obverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found on the base of the bust NE of the B in the designer’s initials. Reverse: Three diagonal die scratches can be found at the right end of the steps. Two die scratches run through the statue’s right leg. A die scratch runs through the lower 4th and 5th Memorial bays.
