1972 Variety WMHR-001

Description

The SD-1 Working Master Hub Reverse variety reaches its fifth year of documentation with WMHR-001 on the 1972-P Washington Quarter, catalogued under CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. By 1972, the use of this master hub had spanned nearly half a decade of quarter production, with working dies made from it distributed to at least two mints annually. The consistent pointed-leaf characteristic to the left of the arrowheads is the hub-level feature that unifies all SD-1 entries across the 1968-1974 range, and it is the first feature to verify when attributing any quarter from this period as a potential WMHR entry. On this 1972-P copper-nickel clad business strike, the spread toward the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath, consistent with the Class II distorted hub doubling classification. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
