1972 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

This 1972 Eisenhower Dollar carries the WDDR-003 doubled die reverse on the Type 1 reverse hub, the simplest of three reverse designs used during 1972 production. The Type 1 reverse features an Earth with no visible crater lines, distinguishing it from the more detailed Types 2 and 3. Frank Gasparro designed the reverse based on the Apollo 11 mission insignia, depicting an eagle landing on the lunar surface with Earth in the background. The same WDDR-003 variety number appears across multiple reverse hub types, as the doubled die occurred on the working hub used to produce dies for different reverse designs.
