Description

Displaying one of the more visually distinctive doubled date presentations in the series, 1972 1¢ WDDO-024 shows a strong clockwise spread manifesting as remnants of an extra horizontal bar of the "2" in the date positioned well above the normal horizontal bar — the emphasized separation distinguishing this variety from those where the extra bar sits only slightly above. The variety confirms the presence of master die doubling on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, consistent with production from a working die descended from the replacement 1972 master die. No external cross-references have been documented (Wexler Variety ID: 1972 1¢ WDDO-024). The obverse marker set is minimal: a very short die scratch runs northeast from the top of the "9" in the date. The reverse carries a richer set of diagnostics: light horizontal die scratches below the left Memorial base; a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the center of the last Memorial column; a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the right cornice; and a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the top of the T in CENT. The cluster of dot-type die gouges on the reverse — three distinct dots in different locations — provides a particularly memorable identification pattern once a collector learns to look for them. The strong separation of the doubled bar on the "2" gives WDDO-024 slightly more immediate visual impact than many of its neighbors in the WDDO sequence, potentially making it a more satisfying find for collectors who enjoy varieties with clear naked-eye or low-magnification visibility.
