Description

The fifteenth Wexler-attributed doubled die obverse for the 1972 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDO-015 presents a clockwise spread visible as remnants of an extra horizontal bar of the "2" in the date above the normal horizontal bar. No external cross-references have been documented for this variety (Wexler Variety ID: 1972 1¢ WDDO-015). Unlike several neighboring varieties in the sequence, the published description does not note the presence of master die doubling on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST — suggesting this variety may descend from the original 1972 master die rather than the replacement, or that the master die doubling was not explicitly confirmed at time of attribution. Obverse die markers include: a small die gouge (dot) found north of the E in LIBERTY; a small die gouge (dot) positioned well north of the IB in LIBERTY; a short die scratch extending north from the upper left of the N in IN; and a short diagonal die scratch found above the right side of the "7" in the date. The reverse carries its own set of identifying features: a small die gouge touching the bottom left side of the T in UNITED; a small die gouge above the left cornice; a die gouge below the right side of the horizontal crossbar of the first T of STATES; and a small die gouge protruding from the center of the underside of the diagonal bar of the N in CENT. These dispersed but specific markers across both sides of the coin provide multiple confirmation points for attribution, making WDDO-015 one of the more straightforward varieties to authenticate when examining potential candidates under magnification.
