1972 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1972 1¢ WDDO-014, this Philadelphia mint Lincoln Memorial cent displays a clockwise spread manifesting as remnants of an extra horizontal bar of the "2" in the date positioned above the normal horizontal bar. In addition to the primary working die doubling, this variety exhibits the master die doubling known for the 1972 date on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST — indicating the working die descended from the replacement master die produced in mid-1972. No external cross-references have been established for this variety. The obverse die markers provide a distinctive identification fingerprint: a short die gouge extends south from the underside of the left side of the horizontal crossbar of the T in LIBERTY; a short die scratch runs through the top of the T of LIBERTY just below and parallel to the horizontal crossbar; a short die scratch extends north-northeast from the top left end of the T of LIBERTY; and a short die scratch extends north-northeast through the E of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found south of the left vertical bar of the M in AMERICA, a small die gouge appears on the roof of the Memorial north of the fourth column, and three short die scratches extend north from the top of the left post. The concentration of obverse markers around the T and E of LIBERTY, combined with the characteristic extra bar on the "2" digit, makes WDDO-014 identifiable through careful low-magnification examination once the correct die markers are confirmed.
