1972-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-1972D-01

Description

This 1972-D Jefferson Nickel displays an exceptionally strong atypical die clash cataloged as ADC-5C-1972D-01. Unlike ordinary die clashes, an atypical die clash produces design transfer that is unusually intense and appears in unexpected locations across the coin. The clash occurred between very strong unabraded dies, meaning the dies were not polished after the clashing event, preserving the full extent of the transferred design elements. On the obverse, the building outline from Monticello is visible along with the letters M and LO from MONTICELLO and S from CENTS. On the reverse, a complete profile and hair outline from Jefferson's portrait transferred from the obverse die. Remarkably, the clash marks are discernible to the naked eye without magnification, which is uncommon for die clash varieties. Attributed by MadDieClashes. The Denver Mint produced this coin during regular 1972 production, and the unabraded state of the dies suggests they continued in use after the clash occurred.
