Description
A nickel from the Denver Mint, the 1972 (D) Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The U.S. Mint produced 351.7 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 64% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Philadelphia and Denver produced large quantities to meet rising circulation demands. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
