Description

First doubled die reverse cataloged for the 1972-D Jefferson Nickel, this variety was discovered by Whaden Curtis. It exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with nice spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing from left to right across the motto. This graduated intensity is characteristic of Class II displacement, where rotational distortion during hubbing concentrates doubling more strongly toward one side of the die face. A die dot inside the large center semicircular window of Monticello serves as the primary reverse die marker, providing a precise attribution point within the building's most prominent architectural feature. As the inaugural DDR entry for 1972-D, WDDR-001 establishes the baseline for the doubled die reverse census on this Denver Mint date. The 1972-D Jefferson Nickel was produced during a period of high-volume coining, and Curtis's discovery opened the door for subsequent researchers to examine the production run for additional hub displacement events.
