Description

The second-ranked doubled die obverse for the 1972-D Eisenhower Dollar, the DDO-002 displays a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST with tripling on the digit 1 of the date — a three-layered impression where three distinct hub impressions are visible, creating two secondary images behind the primary. Tripling is significantly scarcer than standard doubling, as it requires three separate hub impressions on the same die, each at a slightly different position. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-039 with die marriage reference DMR-004, the reverse die is classified as RDV-001 and is listed as DDR-002, creating a dual variety where both obverse and reverse dies show hub doubling. Three die states have been documented: Stage A at early die state pairs the obverse with the DDR-002 reverse also in early state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The 1972-D Eisenhower Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel clad composition as a circulating dollar coin — the large-format dollar that was produced from 1971 through 1978. The tripling on the date provides a particularly distinctive diagnostic, as the three superimposed images create a more complex visual pattern than standard doubled die impressions, and the dual DDO/DDR status makes this die marriage notable across both sides of the coin.
