Description

Sixth in the VarietyVista doubled die obverse sequence for the 1972-D Lincoln Memorial cent, DDO-006 shares the same diagnostic feature as its immediate predecessor — a strong spread producing an extra bar above the 2 of the date — but is distinguished by light hubbing that resulted in a weaker overall impression of the doubled image. Die markers UVC-3116 and DMR-028 separate this working die from DDO-005 within the VarietyVista tracking system, while both varieties share the ODV-027b obverse die variety classification with its characteristic re-engraved surfaces and die gouge in the upper S of TRUST. The light hubbing notation reveals that this die received less pressure during one of its hubbing impressions, producing a shallower design depth that affects how the doubling presents on struck coins — the secondary image, while positionally strong in terms of separation, appears with reduced relief compared to the fully seated primary impression. Collectors examining 1972-D cents for doubled die characteristics should note that DDO-006's light hubbing may cause the extra bar above the 2 to appear less boldly defined than the equivalent feature on DDO-005, despite both varieties showing strong positional spread. The distinction between strong spread (hub displacement magnitude) and light hubbing (impression depth) represents an important diagnostic concept: a die can show wide separation between primary and secondary images while simultaneously displaying reduced relief due to insufficient hubbing pressure during the creation process at the Denver Mint's die preparation facility.
