1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-037
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Charles Vance, this proof Jefferson nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling visible on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and designer's initials FS. The very close spread requires careful examination under magnification to distinguish from die deterioration doubling, but the consistent displacement pattern across multiple design elements confirms a genuine hub doubling event. Obverse die markers include several die scratches at the top of Jefferson's head near the hairline, useful for confirming the specific die. On the reverse, a die scratch appears above the small right window at the roof line, with diagonal die scratches running between the lower portions of the third and fourth columns. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1971-S WDDO-037 Proof. The 1971-S proof Jefferson nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint exclusively for inclusion in proof sets, and doubled die varieties on proof coinage tend to be scarcer because proof dies receive closer inspection and are retired after fewer impressions than their business strike counterparts.
