A very close spread is visible on LIBERTY, the star, the date, the designer's initials, and IN GOD WE TRUST — affecting virtually every text element and device on the obverse face. Heavy die scratches on the rim below Jefferson's bust serve as the primary obverse die marker, likely caused during die maintenance or handling. What makes this variety especially notable is that the reverse die is itself a doubled die, separately cataloged as 1971-S Pr 5¢ WDDR-032 — meaning coins struck from this die pair carry doubling on both sides, a relatively uncommon pairing that elevates the variety's interest among specialists.
