1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Attributed by Gary G. Wagnon and cross-referenced as Wexler 1971-S WDDO-013 Proof, this proof 1971-S Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a very close counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and designer's initials FS. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge left of the upper L in LIBERTY, a vertical die gouge left of the lower G in GOD, and a vertical die gouge right of the middle of the N in IN. Reverse die markers include a diagonal die scratch through the lower portion of the second U of UNUM and a short die gouge from the upper left portion of the first U in PLURIBUS. The counterclockwise spread affecting five distinct obverse design elements — motto, legend, star, date, and initials — documents a comprehensive hub distortion that displaced nearly every raised element on the obverse die. The 1971-S proof Jefferson Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the early years of resumed proof production. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel composition.
