1971-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Paired with a recognized doubled die obverse, WDDO-005 on the 1971-S Proof Jefferson Nickel displays Class II (Distorted Hub) close spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials FS. The Distorted Hub classification indicates the hub developed a subtle deformation between impressions, transferring a slightly warped design to the working die — producing tight displacement where the secondary image nestles almost directly against the primary rather than showing clear rotational separation. A die scratch on the rim above IN provides the principal obverse diagnostic marker. The reverse die carries its own doubled die designation as 1971-S Proof 5-cent WDDR-005, creating another DDO/DDR combination within the early San Francisco proof Jefferson Nickel series. Such pairings — where both dies exhibit doubling — are relatively uncommon and suggest that multiple dies in a production run may have been affected by related hubbing anomalies.
