Description

Strong spread on all lettering, the date, and upper hair detail earned this 1971-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-006 the Cherrypickers designation FS-102, confirming its status as a significant variety within the early clad-era Kennedy Half series. Cataloged as ODV-003 with die markers UVC-186 and DMR-008 in the VarietyVista system, the variety's strong classification means the doubling is detectable under moderate magnification across the full obverse inscription complement. Three die stages document the die pair's service: Stage A at Early Die State shows a light die gouge running east-to-west in the hair just below the middle of the part with the reverse also at EDS, Stage B captures Mid Die State, and Stage C reaches Late Die State. The die gouge in Kennedy's hair part at Stage A provides a useful secondary marker for confirming early die state examples where the doubling is sharpest. As FS-102, this variety receives dedicated coverage in the Cherrypickers' Guide, directing collectors to check all obverse lettering and the upper hair for spread. The 1971-S proof Kennedy Half was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at San Francisco exclusively for proof sets.
