Description

First in the doubled die obverse catalog for the 1971-S proof Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDO-001 shows a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 10 o'clock on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, LIBERTY, and the upper hair details. Some tripling is also visible on IN, indicating at least three hub impressions contributed to this die's production. Class V doubling results from a pivoted rotation between hub and die during manufacture, producing a spread that fans outward from the pivot point — elements farther from 10 o'clock show proportionally greater displacement. Struck at the San Francisco Mint as a proof issue on Gilroy Roberts's obverse portrait, this clad-composition half dollar carries the distinctive mirror fields and frosted devices that characterize Kennedy proof coinage.
