1971-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Standing apart from the light-spread siblings in the 1971-S proof DDO family, DDO-008 carries a medium spread classification — noticeably stronger doubling than the light spread on DDO-004, DDO-009, and DDO-010. This elevated intensity means the secondary hub impression displaced LIBERTY, the star, the date, and designer's initials FS with greater offset, producing more clearly resolved doubling under magnification. Die markers UVC-1400 and DMR-017 place this working die early in the documented population. The reverse pairs with RDV-006, the strong railings variety of Monticello's portico. The medium classification has practical implications: where light-spread varieties require 7x or higher magnification, DDO-008's stronger offset should be detectable at lower power, with thicker secondary lines alongside primary letter strokes. Struck at the San Francisco Mint exclusively for proof sets in copper-nickel composition, this coin was preserved in collector hands from manufacture. Among the 1971-S proof DDO varieties, DDO-008's medium intensity makes it one of the more visually satisfying examples.
