1971-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-170 and DMR-003, this 1971-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-001 displays strong spread on WE TRUST with medium rotational spread on IN GOD, LIBER of LIBERTY, and the hair at the top of Kennedy's head — a pattern combining strong direct displacement on the motto's rightmost word with medium rotational effects across multiple obverse elements, suggesting a hub misalignment with both linear and pivoted components. The partial-word doubling on LIBER of LIBERTY, where the leftmost letters show spread while TY does not, maps the displacement gradient across the inscription. Three documented die stages track this die's life: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS showing a vertical die gouge line under the A of STATES on the reverse; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The Stage B reverse marker — the vertical gouge under the A — provides a mid-life identification point independent of the obverse doubling features. The Kennedy Half Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint in 1971 in the copper-nickel clad composition that replaced the 40% silver clad of 1965-1970, weighing 11.34 grams with a 30.6 mm diameter. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse Kennedy portrait, with Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle on the reverse. The 1971-D was the first Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar in clad composition, marking a production transition. The strong WE TRUST doubling as the primary diagnostic feature makes this variety detectable under moderate magnification, with the IN GOD rotation and partial LIBERTY spread providing secondary confirmation points for complete attribution.
