1971-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
Medium spread and extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date characterize this eleventh doubled die obverse for the 1971 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, carrying die markers UVC-420 and DMR-016. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C showing numerous long thin die scratches on the obverse in late die state, with the reverse listed as DDR-005 in late die state. The obverse is identified as ODV-003, and the notation that the reverse is listed as DDR-005 means this die pair combines a doubled die obverse with a doubled die reverse — making it a particularly desirable variety for collectors pursuing dual-sided hub doubling. The 1971-D was the first year Kennedy Half Dollars were struck exclusively in copper-nickel clad composition for regular production, ending the 40% silver composition used from 1965 through 1970. Denver's production of clad halves created a new metallurgical environment for die interaction, and the documentation of eleven DDOs for this date reflects substantial collector interest in first-year clad Kennedy varieties.
