1971-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

The 1971-D Jefferson nickel RPM-002 records a repunched mint mark on a post-silver Jefferson nickel, struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy following the wartime composition years. VarietyVista documents this variety as UVC-450 and DMR-003. The cross-references record this as a D over D North repunch — the initial D was set slightly to the north before the corrected punch was applied. Stage A is an early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B is a middle die state (MDS) carrying east-to-west die scratches on the reverse and the obverse progressing into MDS; Stage C is a late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). Collectors should look for the secondary D impression to the north of the primary mint mark under low-to-moderate magnification. The D/D North displacement reflects the hand-punching of mint marks directly into working dies — a practice the United States Mint discontinued when mint marks were incorporated into master dies beginning in 1990. The Stage B east-to-west die scratches on the reverse are useful secondary confirmation markers for mid-die-state examples of this variety on the 1971-D Felix Schlag Jefferson nickel.
