Description
The 1971 (D) Jefferson Nickel is a nickel from the Denver Mint, belonging to the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The U.S. Mint produced 316.1 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 75% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. The 1971 "No S" Proof is a rare modern error — proof nickels missing the San Francisco mintmark. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
