Description

Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-004 and Coppercoins 1970S-1DO-009, the 1970-S WDDO-011 under the Small Date parent documents the same doubled die obverse variety as its Large Date counterpart — doubling under the 7 and below the top of the 0 — but classified within the ODV-026 Small Date logotype framework. The reverse die clash marker is particularly noteworthy: a left incuse inverted Y appears in the second bay of the Lincoln Memorial, where an obverse design element was transferred onto the reverse die during a clashless strike event. This inverted Y provides one of the more visually distinctive clash marks in the 1970-S series, and its location in the Memorial's second bay — an area that is otherwise relatively plain and featureless on normally struck coins — makes it straightforward to locate under magnification. Two die stages have been documented, capturing the variety's die life progression. The Crawford CDDO-004 cross-reference connects this variety to the Crawford attribution system's independent documentation, while the Coppercoins 1970S-1DO-009 designation provides a third reference pathway through that database's photographic records. The Small Date parent classification means the date-area doubling under the 7 and below the 0 appears within the compact ODV-026 digit arrangement, and collectors examining 1970-S Small Date cents should check both the date area for doubling evidence and the second Memorial bay for the incuse inverted Y clash mark — the combination of both diagnostics on a single specimen provides definitive attribution confirmation. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A horizontal die scratch connects the tops of the 9 and the 7 in the date. Numerous die scratches run mostly SSW/NNE to the left and right of the bust. A small die gouge can be found below the left Memorial base.
