1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-006 (UVC-1214, DMR-009), this 1970-S Proof Washington quarter features an S/S Tilted repunching with the secondary S impression at an angular offset from the primary. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is provisionally early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is provisionally late die state, unconfirmed. The San Francisco Mint produced 1970-S Proof quarters for inclusion in annual collector sets. Tilted repunched mint marks arise when the hand-applied S punch is rotated between the initial and final impressions; the degree and direction of rotation, combined with the overall offset distance, define each unique tilted variety. RPM-006 occupies its own position within the 1970-S Proof tilted-RPM group (alongside RPM-004, RPM-005, and RPM-007) by virtue of its distinct UVC-1214 and DMR-009 die marker profile. On the polished fields of a Proof coin, the angular displacement of the secondary S is often more readily apparent than on business-strike issues, as the mirrored surface provides a high-contrast background against which the ghost impression's serifs can be evaluated.
