1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-001 (UVC-1209, DMR-004), this 1970-S Proof Washington quarter presents a remarkable triple-punch mint mark: S/S/S South, North. Three distinct S impressions are visible — one shifted south and one shifted north of the primary punch — making this one of the most dramatic repunched mint mark varieties in the Proof Washington quarter series. Three die stages are documented. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is provisionally late die state, unconfirmed. The 1970-S Proof quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint and issued in the annual Proof set. Triple-punch mint marks result from the hand-applied logotype being repositioned twice after the initial impression, each new punch producing an additional ghost image in the die. On a Proof coin, the polished fields and sharp devices make all three S impressions especially legible. RPM-001 is the primary cataloged repunched mint mark for the 1970-S Proof Washington quarter.
