1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

RPM-003 records a second S/S Southeast repunched mintmark variety on the 1970-S Proof Washington Quarter, distinct from RPM-002 despite sharing the same directional displacement — this variety originates from a different die pair. Catalogued UVC-1211 and DMR-006, three die stages are documented: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid die state), and Stage C (late die state). The 1970-S Washington Quarter was produced only as a clad proof at the San Francisco Mint — no business-strike counterpart exists for this date — struck in copper-nickel clad composition under John Flanagan's design and specially finished for collector sets. The existence of two independent S/S Southeast RPM varieties for this date reflects the reality that multiple dies were prepared for proof production and that mintmark repunching could recur on different dies in the same direction. Collectors distinguishing RPM-002 from RPM-003 should consult die-marker diagnostics under the DMR-005 and DMR-006 designations respectively to confirm which die pair a given example belongs to.
