1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Recognized among the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties, the 1970-S WDDO-004 is a proof Jefferson nickel with combined Class II and Class V doubling — Distorted Hub Doubling and Pivoted Hub Doubling acting together. Attributed by Ben Peters and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II+V-CCW and Wexler Variety ID 1970-S WDDO-004 Proof, the variety shows a very nice CCW spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the lower front of the coat, and the designer's initials FS. Obverse die markers include die scratches on the rim above the D of GOD and a possible S/S North mintmark repunching. Reverse markers include a die dot inside the right small window of Monticello, a slanted die scratch above the left arch, and a die gouge to the right of the M of UNUM. Proof Jefferson nickels of the 1970-S are struck at the San Francisco Mint to mirror-like standards, which makes the doubled impressions particularly visible. The combination of Class II and Class V doubling is unusual, as most doubled dies exhibit a single class. The "Best Of" designation reflects community recognition of the exceptional visibility and character of the spread on this die.
