1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
ErrorDescription
Documenting the same abraded obverse die and distinctive reverse "detached roof" marker found on its Small Date counterpart, the 1970-S WDDO-013 under the Large Date parent presents this doubled die variety within the ODV-025 Large Date logotype framework. The doubling under the 7 and below both the top and bottom of the 0 in the date is set against the wider digit spacing characteristic of the Large Date hub, where the greater separation between numerals may make the doubling zones easier to isolate visually compared to the tighter Small Date arrangement. Two die stages have been documented, with the obverse die abrasion marking a significant transition between them — specimens from before and after the polishing intervention display different surface characteristics, and attributors must account for this discontinuity when comparing coins against reference photographs that may represent only one stage. The detached roof on the reverse remains the most distinctive diagnostic marker for this die pair: because the reverse die's anomalous roofline is independent of the obverse abrasion treatment, it persists as a reliable identification feature across both die stages and both parent classifications. No cross-references to other attribution systems have been recorded, making the Wexler catalog the sole formal documentation source. Collectors should examine the Memorial's roofline first as a rapid screening tool — if the detached roof feature is present, the specimen warrants closer examination of the obverse date area for the doubling that confirms WDDO-013. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A twisting die gouge runs mostly SSW/NNE through the back of the forehead. Obverse Stage B: The die has been heavily abraded with numerous die scratches running mostly SW/NE all around the bust. Reverse Stage A: A small die gouge touches the bottom left of the D in UNITED.
