1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
ErrorDescription
Showing doubling under the 7 and below the top of the 0 in the date, the 1970-S WDDO-011 under the Large Date parent has been tracked through two die stages and carries a distinctive reverse die clash marker: a left incuse inverted Y visible in the second bay of the Lincoln Memorial. This clash mark results from die-on-die contact without an intervening planchet, which transferred an inverted impression of an obverse design element — likely a portion of Lincoln's hair or the VDB initials area — onto the reverse die's Memorial colonnade. The incuse inverted Y in the second bay provides a memorable and highly specific attribution marker that can confirm the die identity independent of the obverse doubling evidence. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-004 and Coppercoins 1970S-1DO-009, this variety benefits from documentation across multiple attribution systems, allowing collectors to cross-verify specimens against independent die marker photographs. The Large Date parent classification under ODV-025 positions the date-area doubling within the wider digit spacing of the Large Date hub. The two-stage die life record captures the die's progression from earlier to later states, and the die clash's persistence across stages depends on whether Mint abrasion treatment was applied between them — clash marks embedded deeply enough in the die steel can survive moderate polishing and appear on specimens across multiple stages, while shallower clash impressions may be removed entirely by die maintenance. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A horizontal die scratch connects the tops of the 9 and the 7 in the date. Numerous die scratches run mostly SSW/NNE to the left and right of the bust. A small die gouge can be found below the left Memorial base.
