1970-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-026
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-3435 and DMR-041, DDO-026 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent presents a distinctive form of doubling: a medium spread manifesting as an extra bar below the L in LIBERTY. Unlike the generalized light spread seen on neighboring DDO-025 and DDO-027, this variety's doubling concentrates its most visible evidence in a single, sharply defined location — the bottom of the L — making it one of the more straightforward attributions among the 1970-S Large Date doubled dies. This variety was struck as a regular business strike from the Large Date obverse die variety ODV-025. The extra bar below the L results from the secondary hub impression landing slightly south of the primary impression's position, duplicating the lower horizontal stroke of the letter as a distinct, separated line of raised metal. Medium spread doubling occupies the middle ground between the barely perceptible light spread varieties and the dramatic strong spread doubled dies like WDDO-001 — visible enough to be detected with a 10x loupe but requiring careful comparison against the normal letter profile to confirm. The 1970-S date's significance in Lincoln cent variety collecting stems from the convergence of Large Date versus Small Date hub varieties with a prolific array of doubled dies spanning the full spectrum from subtle to spectacular.
