Description

Closing this batch as DDO-024 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, this doubled die obverse shows a medium spread producing an extra bar below the L of LIBERTY — a single, focused diagnostic that shares its general location with DDO-023's LIBERTY doubling but differs in spread intensity (medium versus strong) and lacks DDO-023's secondary bar above the 7 in the date. Die markers UVC-3376 and DMR-039 identify this variety, with the obverse die belonging to the Large Date variety (ODV-025) and the strike type being Regular Strike from the San Francisco Mint. The extra bar below LIBERTY's L results from a hub displacement that shifted the secondary impression downward, duplicating the lower serif of the letter as a horizontal element extending into the field space below. Medium spread means this bar is clearly visible under 10x magnification but may not be immediately apparent without optical aid. The similarity between DDO-024 and DDO-023 at the LIBERTY position — both showing bars below the L — underscores the importance of checking secondary diagnostics to distinguish between them: DDO-023 additionally shows a bar above the 7 in the date, while DDO-024 does not. Die markers UVC-3376 and DMR-039 provide the definitive separation between the two varieties when doubling characteristics alone leave room for ambiguity. DDO-024 represents one of the later entries in the 1970-S DDO catalog, contributing to a roster that demonstrates the remarkable concentration of hub doubling varieties this date has produced.
