1970-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-019
Error
Description
Attributed as DDO-019 on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, this doubled die obverse exhibits a distinctive combination: medium spread but light hubbing, manifesting as an extra bar above the 7 in the date. Die markers UVC-3122 and DMR-033 identify this variety, which uses the Large Date obverse die (ODV-025) and is a Regular Strike from the San Francisco Mint. The qualification "medium spread but light hubbing" provides technical insight into how this variety was created — the secondary hub impression displaced a moderate distance from the primary (medium spread), but it was applied with less force or fewer cycles than normal (light hubbing), producing a partial extra impression rather than a fully formed duplicate. The result at the date is an extra bar above the 7, where the top of the numeral was duplicated at an upward offset without the secondary impression achieving full depth. This light-hubbing characteristic can make the doubling appear as a thin, raised line rather than a fully realized duplicate digit. The bar above the 7 sits in clean field space, making it detectable as an anomalous element even when the hubbing was insufficient to create bold doubling. As a Regular Strike, DDO-019 was produced for circulation, offering cherry-pickers opportunities to locate specimens in roll searching and general circulation finds among 1970-S Large Date cents.
