Description

Ranking among the stronger doubled die obverses in the Washington Quarter series, the VarietyVista-cataloged 1970 DDO-001 exhibits a strong spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. The breadth of affected elements — spanning two inscriptions and the date numerals — indicates substantial hub displacement during die creation. Three die stages document the working die's life: Stage A with obverse and reverse confirmed in early die state, Stage B tentatively in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C tentatively in late die state (unconfirmed). Die markers UVC-1192 and DMR-003 identify the working die, and the reverse is cataloged as RDV-006. This Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mintmark, as was standard before the 1980 P mintmark policy. John Flanagan's George Washington portrait and heraldic eagle reverse appear on this copper-nickel clad coin. The strong intensity across LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date provides readily identifiable diagnostics under moderate magnification — begin with LIBERTY for the most prominent spread, then confirm across the motto and date.
