1970 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1970 10-cent WDDR-005 with no other known cross-references, this Roosevelt Dime displays a close Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 6 o'clock, affecting USA, the torch flame, and slightly ONE DIME. Class V pivoted hub doubling with a 6 o'clock pivot means the secondary hub impression was rotated clockwise around a point at the bottom of the die, producing increasing displacement as distance from that pivot grows — elements near the top of the coin (USA, the torch) show maximum offset while elements near the bottom (ONE DIME) show minimal displacement, consistent with the "slightly" qualification on ONE DIME. Obverse die markers include die scratches running NW/SE between the tops of the R and T in LIBERTY. Reverse diagnostics are extensive: parallel die scratches run NNW/SSE above the E in EPU, a strong die gouge runs NW from the top right of the M in UNUM, and parallel die scratches run NW/SE to the right of the top of the M in UNUM. The 1970 Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (no mintmark, as Philadelphia did not use P on dimes until 1980), weighing 2.27 grams at 17.9 mm diameter. The torch flame provides a particularly effective diagnostic target for clockwise pivoted doubling because its elongated vertical shape translates rotational offset into a clearly displaced flame outline that shifts progressively relative to the central torch column.
